Well, you see, don't you think names and surnames are either nicknames that stuck on for generations, or play of words that the parents would wish the child be when he/she grew up, or explanation of condition when the child was born, or names of popular or renown or sainted or even names of deified personae in wish that the child would retain the virtues of said name.
For instance, son of Donald, Mac Donald, McDonald, Donald's son, Donaldson, that smith, Mr. Smith, that girl from the farm with the holly trees around the well, Hollywell, Halwell, Victoria, Sakura, Tsubasa (wing), Hikaru (light), Yuuki (strength), Shinji (truth/trust), Yukiko (snow child), April, June, Akiko (autumn child), Brama, Vishnu, Peter, Johannes, Jacob, Mohammed (many different spelling...), Mary, Maria, etc.
